I just got off the phone with my dad, who as I have mentioned is probably looking to buy a car sometime in the spring. So far, the focus has been on roughly $28-35k off lease sedans and crossovers that provide a blend of fun and practicality. Stuff like the Volvo XC70 T6, Chrysler 300C, BMW X5, and Ford Flex Ecoboost. However, I recently drove by a downtown dealer, where I discovered that a certain Isuzu Trooper which !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was still available, six months later. It seems like a good deal, and my dad suddenly seemed keen on the idea of buying that truck, or one like it, for under about $7,000, and then having a $20k budget for a fun convertible for him to DD. The two cars that immediately came up for discussion were this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I'd never even thought about this beater truck/fun convertible combo, but now I'm intrigued. What does Oppo think, keeping in mind that so far this is just speculation.

A fine idea if you have the space for it. In the perfect world, I'd have 3: a DD, a truck and a sports car, but alas...

I always forget that we have a 4 car garage, because 2 of the bays are always full of bikes and lawnmowers and shit. But yeah, the space exists.

Its the way to go, I'm driving a minty fresh 04 Mustang GT convertible, and a beat up 04 Nissan Pathfinder. Much better than trying to do both and ending up with something that doesn't really do anything very well. Also, my mom bought a Trooper brand new in 95 or 97, got it t-boned a short while later, and we drove that thing to over 280,000 miles, until a stealership gave us $200 for it on a trade in.

I'll tell ya straight up '10 Mustang GT's are worthless because new body but that old 4.6L SOHC is crap

I like the combo idea. I have a truck/car-with-more-than-two-seats combo going right now. I will never ever go back to not owning a truck. It's too damn convenient.

Oh that's right, the new engine was 2011...shit, I forgot. I mean, still a nice car, but unless I can find a 2011+ 5.0 for that price, I guess the BMW is the better buy. I was leaning that way anyways.

Ya the BMW isn't a bad buy but if the Speed aint your main thing the GT has a lot of fancy stuff....well SYNC anyway....

Why not an Audi A5?

Volvo C70 as well

Thought about the C70. It's a good candidate, but I kinda would like rear wheel drive.

E93's are great. Get a 335i if he is willing to spend a little more. Fun cars, and the inline 6 sounds great. Throw on an exhaust and enjoy it with the top down.

328i is pretty bulletproof, but of course convertible adds the complexity of a hardtop. Also, back seats are actually usable, so it's pretty practical.

Oh, and I'm just saying... Mid/low 30's gets you a 335is Vert. 8/10 an M3 for half the price. Rusto and I were talking about it earlier. DCT is better than the auto if he doesn't want manual, and manuals aren't too hard to find if he wants one.

While I'd love a 335i, mid-low 30s doesn't leave any cash left over for the SUV that would have to accompany a RWD convertible.

a regular 335i vert can be had for $25k, less if you look around.

The 335is is what costs more. Pretty much a 335i with all the M-sport goodies, better exhaust, and a tune.

I'm a bit biased, but a loved E46 M3 Cabrio could be had and is much easier to maintain.

In order to be fully un-Jalop, it might need whatever that meh automatic was that people complained about.

I wouldn't buy a current gen XC70. The previous gen ones are cheaper, get better fuel economy, and have 5 cylinders. An 06 XC70 can be had for 5k.

The other ones are larger, have nicer interiors, have more equipment, are much more powerful, and safer. The previous gen is a good car for a small budget, but 30k can get you a well-loaded T6 XC70 that is a lot more car than the last gen, and suits our needs better.

Kinja'd!!! 44444444444 > sm70- why not Duesenberg?
01/04/2015 at 14:40

Kinja'd!!!1

They're not actually that much more powerful (I'm also biased against a Ford derived engine)... Now the interior I agree with. Volvo dropped the ball on the Gen 1 and 2 XC70s... They should have taken the R interior and shoved it in. The stupid woodgrain trim should have been brushed aluminum in all of them not just the Ocean Race cars.

How much power is the T5 XC70 or whatever the fastest one from that gen is? I only remember it being low-mid 200s.

Kinja'd!!! 44444444444 > sm70- why not Duesenberg?
01/04/2015 at 15:59

Kinja'd!!!0

Only a LPT 2.5t on the XCs, not HPT T5. Yep low 200s... 210ish. But they make lots of torque and only weigh a 3600 lb. Also, a tune can fix that. Volvo has a Polestar tune that ups it to 240hp and 270ft-lb torque.

Kinja'd!!! sm70- why not Duesenberg? > 44444444444
01/04/2015 at 16:02

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah but we'd be looking at a T6. 300hp/325 torque, or 325hp/350 torque with poletar. And our current car is a Ford, so I have no objections to a Ford engine.

It just seems unnatural to me to have a non 5 cylinder Volvo V70/XC70... I'm a bit biased.

Kinja'd!!! sm70- why not Duesenberg? > 44444444444
01/04/2015 at 16:43

Kinja'd!!!0

Unfortunately, a V6 being unnatural in an XC70 does not make an old 5-cylinder a better buy for us. As for you or anyone else buying one, they are superb cars. I looked at one for me, but I ha a sub 10k budget. My dad does not.

Kinja'd!!! 44444444444 > sm70- why not Duesenberg?

It's an inline 6... Did you look at the new V60 Cross Country (I dunno if they're even in showrooms yet)? IMHO Volvo kinda abandoned the XC70 and is instead focusing on the V60 (which is much smaller).

Kinja'd!!! sm70- why not Duesenberg? > 44444444444

Whoops, you're right, I6. I'm forgetful.

The V60 XC looks excellent. Unfortunately, it starts at around $40k, and having looked at both the normal V60 and XC60 CUV, we deemed them both too small.

Whatever you choose I think it's a good idea. I have my Mustang GT convertible for fun and a Dodge Ram conversion van for when there's people to drive or stuff to haul.

Van has been great for carrying mattress (save on delivery fees), furniture, Christmas gifts, etc. It's good for family road trips and is better in the snow than my Mustang.

Mustang is good for speed, looking nice, sounding nice, going to the beach etc. It makes it fun to drive.
